The Rearing Process
All pullets are reared to a set standard. This is a very comprehensive programme which easily meets the
criteria of DEFRA’S standards as well as the more demanding criteria of special marketing terms and various
governing bodies.
As virtually all of our pullets go to free range production, rearing is aimed to produce strong range ready pullets.
All pullets are litter reared and are trained to roost on either perches or raised slatted areas. A strict lighting programme,
along with regular weighing ensures body weight and maturity is monitored to ensure the onset of lay suits the birds needs,
maximizing the production potential. Correct body weight and development is also achieved by use of a four stage feeding
programme which starts with chick crumbs and finishes with rearer mash.
All pullets are vaccinated against major poultry diseases and variant strains.
The vaccination programme is part of a full health scheme which starts at day old, with samples of chick box paper and
chick mortalities to assess health and salmonella status. High quality broad spectrum vitamins are given at key stages in
the vaccination programme to help the immune system to develop. To ensure this has been successful blood samples are
taken to study antibodies. Manure samples are tested for worms and, in the unlikely event of a positive result, pullets will
be treated before leaving rearing houses. Blood samples are also frozen for future reference should that be needed.
To ensure pullets can easily adapt to any environment or management system some extra steps are taken. During lights
on period the pullets listen to radio’s, this helps prepare them for a variety of noises and is calming. Pullets also get as
much human contact as possible and are walked through as many times a day as possible.
All breeds of pullets are reared together in one flock. Correct lighting, stocking density, feeder and drinker space
and a well managed environment allow a mixed flock to rear with low stress and without the need for de-beaking.
